Caring for Your Tree
Once you have your Christmas tree set up, the rest is easy. Make sure that your tree has water EVERY DAY. Fresh trees drink a lot of water, especially for the first week or so. The first time you give your tree water, make sure the water is very warm, but not too hot to touch. This helps the tree's pores absorb the water and allows the water-carrying tissues (xylem tissue) to transport the water up the tree trunk easily. Warm water softens the tree's sap and allows more water to get in later.
- Give your tree warm or room temperature water the rest of the season.
- Many people add sugar to their Christmas tree's water, but we don't recommend doing this because it can cause the tree to dry out faster. Nothing is more important than plenty of water for your tree. A fresh-cut tree, depending upon it's size, may drink 8oz to 1/2 gallon of water in a single day.
- As the season goes by, your tree will gradually drink less water.
- Never use a tree stand that does not hold water.
- Place your tree away from heating vents or baseboard heat units to prevent excessive drying.
